Event Details

Led by Hong Kong artists Kingsley Ng and Stephanie Cheung, A Sea of Words for Portsmouth reimagines their celebrated work Over The Ocean, premiered in Hong Kong in 2017.

Crying Out Loud first introduced Kingsley and Stephanie to the Solent region through a UK/Hong Kong arts exchange trip, which sparked the beginnings of this ongoing collaboration.Their exploratory visit in 2023 deepened connections with local sites and histories, shaping the vision for this new installation.

Now transported to Portsmouth Historic Quarter, A Sea of Words breathes new life into ocean-related stories collected from local communities. Everyday materials become poetic landscapes, reflecting themes of migration, belonging, and connection.

Collecting Stories

The participatory journey begins during Refugee Week 2025, when Kingsley and Stephanie visit Portsmouth to collect ocean-related stories from local communities in collaboration with 432 Nomads. These narratives—gathered through workshops and community storytelling—will be brought to life in October 2025 at Portsmouth Historic Quarter, transforming memory into shared experience.

Step Inside the Story

Visitors are invited to step into a reflective space where light and sound ripple like waves across a harbour. Through interactive elements, each journey is honoured—shared memories, hopes, and hidden voices carried across water and brought to life.
